High speed train services started on July 10 from Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar via the city of Ipoh, just in time before the start of the Hari Raya celebrations following the end of the Ramadan. Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai who inaugurated the service said that the new line will be served by two daily services, which will be increased at a later point. The fare from Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar is priced at RM81 in second class (US$22). Travel time from KL to Thailand’s border town is four hours and 45 minutes.
