The Ratchaprasong area, Bangkok’s largest shopping area for both locals and foreign travellers, was shaken by a bomb Monday in the early evening. The bomb exploded near to one of Bangkok’s most visited attraction, the Erawan Shrine where dancers are performing all day long traditional dances. Nearby are the Erawan Shopping Mall, the Grand Hyatt, Gaysorn Plaza Shopping Mall and Central World, one of Bangkok’s largest shopping centres.
The explosion occurred around 7 pm and killed some 15 people according to first figures released by Bangkok police. Two other bombs were found nearby and across the street at Gaysorn Plaza, an upper market shopping mall. Both were fortunately desactivated.
The entire area around Ratchaprasong, Silom as well as the Skytrain have been closed for safety reasons.
