To counter the weakening Rupiah and a soft domestic market due to a slowdown in economic growth in Indonesia, Indonesia AirAsia is (re)opening international routes from secondary destinations.
Most expected is the reopening of Surabaya-Bangkok which was abandoned In mid-2014. The route will be reopened from September 4 with four weekly frequencies. The carrier is also looking at opening Padang-Singapore. The airline for now flies only the Padang-Kuala Lumpur route. This could mark a shift in the strategy of the carrier which now wants to strenghten its international operation.
IAA and Indonesia AirAsia X network currently includes 10 destinations in Indonesia as well as nine international destinations including four in Malaysia, two in Thailand, two in Australia and Singapore. Indonesia AirAsia X is also due to start flights from Bali to both Melbourne and Sydney.
