The number of foreign visit arrivals in Lao PDR for 2015 is expected to be at least 4.3 million, a senior official said in an interview with KPL News on Thursday.
Director General of Lao Tourism Marketing Department under the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism Saly Phimphinith said that the income generated in the country by foreign visitors is estimated to have reach almost US$670 million.
Last year’s growth in the number of foreign visitors to Laos is estimated to be 4% higher than the figure recorded in 2014 which saw 4.1 million foreign visitors.
Thai nationals shared the largest portion of foreign visitors to Laos followed by Vietnamese and Chinese. Visitors from neigbouring countries and others in the region accounted for 80 per cent of foreign visitors to Laos.
On average, each foreign visitor spends up to US$30 per day during their stay in Laos.
The most popular destinations were Luang Prabang, Champassak, and Vang Vieng, a district in Vientiane Province.
Laos currently has more than 1,960 tourist sites, including over 270 historical attractions, almost 540 cultural attractions and 1,145 natural tourist sites. However, only 689 of these tourist sites have been developed and introduced to the public. “Our country is peaceful, safe, culturally rich, and has an abundance of ecotourism activities. As a result, the number of foreign visitors to Laos increases every year,” said Mr Saly.
“As this year has witnessed Laos being integrated into the AEC, the department will focus on developing all untapped tourism sites, improve infrastructure and public facilities by encouraging private investment in the tourism industry, and further develop human resources, especially English language skills and guide training,” said Mr Saly.
