Is there an inflation of travel shows and marts in Southeast Asia and particularly in the Greater Mekong area? This is certainly a thought that many professionals in the tourism industry might have… let’s look at the fact. The Greater Mekong Sub-region has so far three events which have been established for at least a decade: the Thailand Travel Mart Plus -also promoting Mekong Countries- taking place in June: the Mekong Tourism Forum- a specialized conference looking at tourism issues in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). And then there is a September ITE in Ho Chi Minh City, a large travel show which is also emphasizing tourism in the GMS. The GMS receives currently some 52 million of international travellers a year with 60% alone coming to Thailand.
Is there then really a space for another travel show? Cambodians think that there is still a space for a specific travel mart focusing on Cambodia and the Greater Mekong Subregion. Welcome then to the first edition of the Cambodia Travel Mart, due to take place from August 19 to 21 in Siem Reap. According to Undersecretary of State So Visothy, the new show is due to attract some 200 buyers and some 35 international media to cover. The event is endorsed by the Minister of Tourism Dr. Thong Khon, who indicates that the “CTM will be the best tourism business platform in Southeast Asia for buyers and sellers”.
Cambodia has the ambition to be a major player in the region for tourism development. “We are now moving from an emerging economy to a middle-size developing economy. And we want to seize now the opportunity to become a MICE and meeting destination as we fully embrace ASEAN and its open economic space”, added So Visothy.
