Luang Prabang provincial authorities confirm to travallers that they will keep under investigation prices charged at hotels during this year’s celebration of Laotian New Year (Pi Mai Lao) in the province will remain “reasonable”.
Presently, preparations for the celebration of the end of 2558 B.E and the arrival of 2559 B.E in Luang Prabang – one of the most popular destinations for Pi Mai Lao celebrations – have been completed and the Pi Mai celebration wwas launched last week on Saturday and will last until April 20, according to Chief of Luang Prabang district, Mr Soukan Bounyong.
Public and private sectors have prepared their services for visitors who want to celebrate Pi Mai Lao in the World Heritage city.
This year, relevant authorities will make greater efforts to control the prices of food, accommodation, and other services to make sure they are being offered at reasonable prices, said Mr Soukan.
According to Agoda reservation website, average prices in five- and four-star properties in Luang Prabang were fluctuating between 115 US dollars and 400 US dollars. However, many three star properties are currently sold around 45 to 60 Us dollars.
Air fares are however skyrocketing: A return trip on Thai AirAsia between Bangkok and Luang Prabang are sold around THB 7,600- the equivalent of US$220.
The Pi Mai celebration in Luang Prabang will feature more than 50 parades involving around 5,000 people, the Miss Lao New Year contest, and trade fairs showcasing domestic and imported products, among others. Last year, over 600,000 tourists visited Luang Prabang Province and generated income of over US$189 million. Some US$10 million are earmarked this year for the improvement of 20 priority tourist sites
