After Melia Hotels, it’s Now Time for Mella Hotels in the Philippines

Some might find the naming rather confusing—especially since Melia Hotels currently has properties in The Philippines—but the newly launched Mella Hotels is related to Philippines real estate company Vista Land & Lifescapes, which already owns residential units named ‘Camella Homes’. “The company’s hotel chain will carry the name Mella, similar but a shortened version of our popular housing brand Camella Homes,” explained Manuel B. Villar Jr., chairman and founder of Vista Land & Lifescapes.

Talking to local media, Mr. Vilar Jr. unveiled his plans for the future hotel chain. “By 2020, Vista Land will be completely different and will be a complete real estate company. There will be horizontal and vertical residential projects, hotels, malls and BPO offices,” reported the Philippines Star newspaper.

Mr Villar indicated that the hotel chain will mostly be positioned into a three-star segment, which is mostly searched by Philippines’ local middle classes. The first units of Mella Hotels are due to open in Tagaytay, Las Pinas, Bataan while two properties are planned for Boracay. At present, the company manages a small hotel on Boracay, island. The property was recently acquired.

“We are still feeling our way in the hotel business but we plan to go big and we will soon be ramping up our expansion,” added Mr. Vilar Jr. The company is already building two hotels—a second branch in Boracay and a third one in Las Piñas. “We have not decided yet on the number of rooms but these should have around 150 rooms each,” he went on to say.

Vista Land estimates that the investment for the  construction of  the hotel in Boracay will reach US$223 million. The property will be located next to the upscale Shangri-La Resort Boracay. For the Las Pinas branch, Vista Land is expected to invest US$112 million to US$133 million. First properties could open at the end of 2017/early 2018.
