TripAdvisor just released its list of “Travelers’ Choice Destination on the Rise” for the world. And surprisingly, only one ASEAN destination made it in the top 10… and a completely unknown one from most travellers!
The ASEAN lucky winner is El Nido, famed for its white-sand beaches and coral reefs. The destination is located in the Province of Palawan West of the Filipino archipelago.
“We are very happy with the recognition of El Nido as a destination on the rise, especially as this is based on the unbiased reviews and opinions submitted by Trip Advisor users all over the world,” tourism Secretary Wanda Corazon Teo said in a statement sent to newspapers around the country.
Teo proudly said that such recognition only affirms the tourism agency’s efforts and initiatives.
“This is an affirmation of the Department of Tourism’s continuing efforts to enable quality destinations through enabling regulations and standards. The initiatives to enhance tourist experience are reinforced by recognitions like this. We hope to have more of them throughout the Philippines as we work together with the industry in making our destinations the best choices for the travelers,” the DOT chief added.
Among the 10 top rising destinations within Asia named by TripAdvisor’s users, other ASEAN destinations named by the community travel website are Dalat in Vietnam (rank 4), Sapa in Vietnam (rank 6), Kuching in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo (rank 8) followed by two more destin ations in Malaysia: Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Borneo (rank 9) and Georgetown on Penang Island (rank 10).
However, when looking at TripAdvisor’s list of 25 top destinations, ASEAN fares better with four destinations recognized by website’s users: Siem Reap ranks fifth followed by Hanoi (rank 8), Ubud in Indonesia (rank 10) and finally Bangkok (rank 15).
