Garuda Offers More Direct Flights between Sulawesi and Sumatra

After opening a non stop service between Makassar in South Sulawesi and Medan in North Sumatra, Garuda Indonesia opens on January 17 the first ever link between Makassar and Palembang (South Sumatra).

ational flag carrier Garuda Indonesia announced Sunday it will open a direct flight from Makassar, South Sulawesi, to Palembang, South Sumatra, starting Jan. 17.

The announcement was made by airline’s marketing and information technology director, Nina Sulistyowati. In a press release, the director explaine that the move is part of Garuda Indonesia’s strategic plan to expand its market and develop the domestic network, especially since Makassar and Palembang serve as key economic hubs.

The flight will be available four times a week every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday using the Bombardier CRJ 1000 aircraft, which can accommodate 96 passengers. The flight from Makassar to Palembang is scheduled to depart at 5:55 p.m. and arrive at 7:35 p.m., while the flight from Palembang to Makassar will depart at 8:15 p.m. and arrive at 11:55 p.m.

Garuda Indonesia already serves since December 20 the Medan-Makassar route with a non stop flight. The flight lasts three hours and a half and is served also with a Bombardier CRJ 1000 on a daily basis.

While Medan and Palembang passengers will have connection in Makassar to destinations in the eastern part of Indonesia such as Raja Ampat, Ambon, Jayapura, Timika, Merauke, Kupang and Bau-Bau, Suouth Sulawesi passengers will connect to destinations in Western Indonesia such as Sabang, Silangit, Nias, Leuksmawe and Pinangsori.

Medan-Makassar departs at 6:00 p.m. for an arrival at 10:50 p.m. while the Makassar-Medan will leave the South Sulawesi capital at 08:00 p.m. for an arrival in North Sumatra at 10:40 p.m.

“Hopefully both services will contribute to boost tourism in Indonesia, which is part of our commitment to continue to support the government’s program of attracting 20 million tourists in 2019,” indicated Nina Sulistyowati.


Garuda Indonesia offers 25 destinations out of Makassar and 12 destinations out of Medan.
