A new attraction for Yangon is the yet-to-be-built night market which is considered to become a true tourism asset for Myanmar former capital. A private company is funding the project which should welcome its first tourists by the end of the year according to national newspaper, the Myanmar Times.
“Upgrades to the night markets will commence during the coming dry season,” said mayor U Maung Maung Soe at a press conference held at the Yangon City Hall. We would like people to visit the night market, to enjoy all types of food and relax with family and friends. We will complete it by the end of this financial year. Operations will start next month, when the weather is better,” added the mayor.
The future nightmarket is due to look very similar to the recent trend of setting containers and turn them in shops or eateries. The operation has been successful already in Bangkok, Phnom Penh or Siem Reap.
In addition to food and beverage stalls, vendors will also be permitted to sell different kinds of consumer goods, garments, phones and accessories, handicrafts, flowers and homewares.
The market will include an upgraded parking space with better access for taxis. The container-shops will also be able to sell liquor and beers, making it a more socially desirable nightspot.
he night market will be reconstructed by the A25 Myanmar Development Company through a public-private partnership (PPP), said U Thaung Tin, deputy head of the Markets Department of YCDC.
Aside from the night market renovations, which are intended to attract more local and foreigner visitors, the YCDC also vowed to improve municipal markets around the city. We called tenders and private companies have been awarded the tenders for two markets. New stalls are being constructed and the upgrading will also ensure that they are clean and convenient to shoppers,” explained the deputy head of the Markets Department.
