Thai Vietjet inaugurated during the ASEAN Summit in Bangkok two new domestic routes in Thailand linking Udon Thani to Bangkok and Chiang Rai.

November 2 was considered an auspicious day for Thai Vietjet which officially announced the commercial launch of two new direct services connecting Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi Airport) and Chiang Rai with the city of Udon Thani in Northeast Thailand, which is home to the largest overseas Vietnamese community in the land of Smiles. The ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister of Vietnam Nguyen Xuan Phuc and the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Anutin Charnvirakul during the 35th ASEAN Summit, taking place in Bangkok from November 2-4, 2019.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnam’s Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh, said: “Congratulations to Vietjet on today’s opening ceremony for the new routes of Bangkok and Chiang Rai to Udon Thani. I am impressed by Vietjet’s outstanding efforts over the past years to achieve great business expansion not only in Vietnam but also in the region. The carrier has also simultaneously built and developed Thai Vietjet successfully. Those activities really contribute positively to the economic, trade, cultural and tourism exchanges between Vietnam and Thailand. May I wish Vietjet a great success ahead and hope the airline will transport more and more tourists from Vietnam and the region to Thailand and vice versa.”

“I am really honored to be here among all of you to commemorate the routes launching of Vietjet in Thailand. The two cities of Chiang Rai and Udon Thani that Vietjet has chosen are tourist destinations not only for Thai but also foreign travelers. I would like to thank Vietjet for your investment and contributions to Thailand at the time that we need. The new routes will surely contribute to the transportation and cooperation between the two countries of Thailand and Vietnam,” said Thai Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

The Bangkok – Udon Thani route will operate on daily basis starting from November 25, 2019. Both cities will be served by 10 weekly flights. The first one departs from Bangkok at 7:20 and arrives in Udon Thani at 8:30 with the return flight taking off from Udon Thani at 9:10 and arrives in Bangkok 10:20.  On Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, a second flight will take off from Bangkok at 16:25 and arrives in Udon Thani at 17:35. With a modern fleet of over 80 Airbus aircraft, Vietjet is operating 150 routes covering destinations across Vietnam and international destinations with around 400 flights daily. To date, the airline has carried nearly 100 million passengers, whilst the number of passengers transported by Vietjet between Thailand and Vietnam and within Thailand has reached 9 million.

The two new routes to Udon Thani will not only further expand Vietjet’s flight network in Thailand but also help to connect travellers to destinations in Vietnam, such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang as well as to South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan among others.

Udon Thani is a major hub in Northeast Thailand and serves as well as a convenient gateway to reach Laos, an hour away from the airport by shuttle bus. It is also considered the prime economic centre of the region with one of the largest populations of expats, including a major Vietnamese community. In 1928 Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh stayed in the province as part of his journey fighting for Vietnam’s independence with a memorial commemorating his stay.
